Unknown to me, the frosty morning spent with my grandfather at the local executive golf course would be the start of my love and enjoyment in the game of a lifetime. My grandfather and I spent the day together with one main objective: to have fun. We certainly had a great time that day, and it was my enjoyment that was the driving motivator to come back again. Not to mention the occasional surprise mini candy bar waiting in the cup, making me streak to the next tee, eager to see what was waiting.
In golf we are taught to take off our hat to thank our playing partners, rake bunkers and fix marks on the greens, and keep truthful scores. These fundamentals of golf instilled in me the value of respect, responsibility and honesty. Through golf, youth will develop these skills to be used throughout life.
The value of youth golf:
Begin the game of a lifetime: Start early in a game that can be played for a lifetime!
Friendships: Platform to build lifelong relationships.
Life skills & character development: Provides lessons for success on the course and in life.
Family: Promotes participation and activity for the whole family.
Fun!: Having fun is what is most important at the end of the day.
Youth golf provides memories, friendships and lessons that live on long after the round is over. My family’s ability to make golf fun ignited my youth spirit to embrace the game and improve. Just like my grandfather, I aim to bring this same enjoyment to youth today. It doesn’t seem too long ago I turned to my grandpa on that frosty day and said, “Hey, this golfing stuff is fun, can we do it again?” “Yes, yes we can,” he said.
At the Washington Youth Golf Academy (WYGA) at Camas Meadows, our core values (Community | Friendship | Character Development | Fun) are an integral part of our mission.
